NATURE IS THE GREATEST MEDICINE
When I think of combating depression or anxiety, I usually think of conventional remedies. Images of medication bottles and pharmacies fill my thoughts. But what if something more simple and natural helped to alleviate those disorders?
You may have experienced how being in natural surroundings uplifts the mood. Have you ever took a camping trip in a forest or near the lake? If you have, then you know how relaxing and rejuvenating those trips were! I bet you felt completely recharged and promised yourself to take more vacations soon after.
Why is nature the perfect healer? The answer is actually quite simple. Humans evolved in nature. We are the product of millions of years of evolution. Fortunately, we did not evolve sitting in front of our television sets! Habitually being in an unnatural environment is not only depressing but has the ability to increase stress levels. This is why creating a balance is key. Of course if you live in the city, your jungle is very different then our ancient ancestors. Instead of trees and green savanah, you'll find yourself in between light posts barbwire and pavement. Not only that, you'll likely breathe vehicle exhaust and be exposed to some level of toxic pollution. Such an environment is not only highly stressful but impedes contentment and can increase depression and anxiety.
Taking a walk in a natural surrounding will automatically improve your mental outlook and overall health. Studies have shown that people who regularly visit parks or places with natural settings have decreased hypertension, lower blood pressure and increased positive mood. Depression is also reduced as well as anxiety. Even pain is reduced in people that are exposed to natural scenery.
Many more benefits can be attributed to being immersed in nature. Higher white blood count which helps defend your immune system from disease, can be found in individuals who regularly visit natural places. Higher self esteem and happiness are also positive attributes.
Just several visits to a park on a weekly basis can significantly boost your health. If you cannot go to a park or forest, then your garden can reap similar beneficial health benefits. Just be sure to be surrounded by enough greenery and you'll automatically be rewarded!
